Feedback from Trainee Police Officers that have been on placement with our Sports Project

Now that I have completed my training and am on division I can see how my time spent at Nacro helped me to become more aware of the issues some teenagers have and the hard work that some organisations put in to try and stop them going off the rails. I have dealt with a lot of teenagers whilst on division and although some of them have been practically impossible to get through to, being aware that some of them have underlying issues with family or school life helps me to try and deal with them professionally and with some respect and that they just not yet another problem teenager.

So, in essence, my time at Nacro has certainly been useful in my work and I hope other officers who have attended this placement feel the same way. I also have the greatest of respect for you and your team who put themselves out to give young people a better start. Whether it is successful or not depends on the individuals desire to succeed and from the time I spent with your organisation I like to think that this was the majority of them.

I have to say that I found the week very beneficial as it is dealing with a part of the community that I haven't dealt with before.  All of the staff there were very helpful, friendly and informative.  I mainly spent time with Allen who is a credit to the organisation.  The passion and dedication he showed towards the youths was very evident throughout my time there.

I learned a lot about NACRO and how it worked and feel that there should be more similar projects, as it has such a positive impact on the local communities e.g.. the football in the evening. I feel the project also makes a huge difference to the youths having trouble at school and hopefully preventing them deal with the likes of me in the future!!

When I was on my placement unfortunately the young people were not there for lessons as it was the summer holidays, however I did go to a Monday & Thursday football session.

I think it was beneficial to the young people to see a police officer, as their ages ranged from about 5 yrs to 15 yrs it was a mixed reaction.  I think the younger group were at first shocked to see an officer and may have been a little intimidated at first but when I spoke to them they were fine and were just asking lots of questions which I thought was really good. The older group were not really interested in me being there and just wanted to get on with their football.

It was good for all of the groups to speak to a police officer when they were not in trouble, as it seemed that the only time they had spoken to police is when they have been in trouble.  Hopefully by police officers doing this placement it will change the perception of the police to young people to show that we are just out doing our job and we are not the 'enemy' as some of the young people appeared to think the police are against them.  Also the more officers that get sent to NACRO it will give the young people chance to get used to the police presence and hopefully the police can be more accepted in the community.
